    Join the conversation as we discuss David F. Hoff and W. Warner Burke's book, "Learning Agility: The Key to Leader Potential". This book club will be led by ODN of New York member, and Founder and Principal, Perceval Associates, Jane Abitanta.

    About the book

    Learning agility is not a new concept, but it took years of research to prove that it really does exist, and can be quantified on an individual level. Out of that research came the introduction of the Burke Learning Agility Inventory™ (Burke LAI) as the first reliable, theoretically grounded way to measure learning agility. This book explains how learning agility is measured, and explores the ways that this information can be developed and applied by individuals and organizations.

     Jane Abitanta 

    Jane is the founder of Perceval Associates, a consultancy focused on helping leaders deliver more compelling messages to their clients, investors and sales teams. She has advised many of the world’s top institutional fund managers, family offices, hedge funds, and private equity firms and their portfolio companies including management teams from healthcare, technology, insurance, food and entertainment companies. Jane is particularly skilled in helping teams to more effectively articulate their particular edge in terms of the real-world needs of their clients and markets.

    Prior to the formation of Perceval Associates, Jane was an investment strategist with Citicorp Investment Management and held executive business development positions at Bessemer Trust and Swiss Bank Corporation. With an MBA in Finance and Investment Management from Fordham University, and a BA in Economics and Political Science from the University of Delaware, Jane earned an MA in Social-Organizational Psychology and Change from Columbia University in 2008 and was a teaching assistant to W. Warner Burke. She is a member of the board of 100 Women in Finance and has served as charter faculty for the Institute for Private Investors, a member of the Investment Committee of Women’s World Banking, and director of the Association for Investment Management Sales Executives (AIMSE).

    Our speaker, Kathryn Goldman Schuyler, will share insights into organizational health from interviews and conversations with key OD thinkers including Ed Schein, Margaret Wheatley, Peter Senge, Robert Quinn, and Otto Scharmer. 

    Kathryn has brought these wise thought leaders together for her recent book, Creative Social Change (2016), and in this webcast, will work to to revitalize our OD awareness of the central importance of organizational health. She’ll share her thinking in ways that may help you to see your own priorities on these core questions more clearly.

    Kathryn Goldman Schuyler

    Kathryn is an experienced organizational consultant, leadership coach, and public speaker. Using her years of consulting experience in change and development with executives and their teams, combined with her personal exploration of mindfulness, awareness, and somatic learning, she is a great contact for creative leadership retreats. In her work Kathryn draws on her lifetime certification in the FELDENKRAIS METHOD, her professional experience as a clinical sociologist, and deep study with Jean Houston and various Buddhist masters, as well as decades of educating new OD professionals. She has written several books in which she gathered voices from around the world about bringing mindful moments in everyday work: INNER PEACE—GLOBAL IMPACT: Tibetan Buddhism, Leadership, and Work (IAP-2012), Leading with Spirit, Presence, and Authenticity (Jossey-Bass/Wiley - 2014), and Creative Social Change (Emerald Publishing – 2016). She brings a sense of humor and caring to all she does and aims to support you in doing the same!

    Leaders play a crucial role in creating a culture that brings out the best in people. In the workplace, indignities can often be systematic, emanating from policies put forth by management. The leadership team needs to be on board with dignity education if it is to become a way of life at work, both by modeling dignified behaviors and by creating policies that are mindful of the effect they have on their people. Dr. Hicks’ talk will outline the steps that need to be taken to create a culture of dignity in your organization.

    What you will learn:

    1. What dignity is and how to honor it in ourselves and others

    2. How to avoid violating your own dignity and the dignity of others

    3. How to create healthy relationships as well as repair those that have suffered from violations of dignity

     Dr. Donna Hicks

    Dr. Donna Hicks is an Associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University.  She facilitated dialogues in numerous unofficial diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Colombia, Cuba, Libya and Syria. She was a consultant to the BBC in Northern Ireland where she co-facilitated a television series, Facing the Truth, with Archbishop Desmond Tutu.   She has taught courses in conflict resolution at Harvard, Clark, and Columbia Universities and conducts trainings seminars in the US and abroad on the role dignity plays in conflict. She consults to corporations, schools, churches, and non-governmental organizations. Her book, Dignity:  It’s Essential Role in Resolving Conflict, was published by Yale University Press in 2011.  Her second book, Leading with Dignity will be published by Yale University Press in the fall of 2018.

    They say desegregation was a big step forward; But integration only covered up a rotten core; The surface might’ve changed but the cauldron is still hot; Now we more politically correct with less real talk.

    What this verse speaks to is that legislation and policies are necessary, but not sufficient, because they only regulate bigotry, injustice, and oppression. For long-term, positive change we must include inner transformation. Deeply honest, direct, and sometimes profoundly challenging conversations are a key in this inner transformation, both personally and collectively.

    In this short introductory seminar, participants will learn about basic frames and skills to serve in this inner transformation. Specifically, participants will learn about developmental psychology and the powerful frame it offers us to engage our differences in service of our growth and connection. And, alongside the developmental psychology frame, we will practice (emphasis on practice!) the fundamental skills of listening, emotional awareness and perspective taking - foundational skills in having conversations that yield to personal and collective transformation.

    Gabriel Wilson, is a talented facilitator and educator skilled at working with difficult issues, diverse perspectives, and across generational boundaries. His interpersonal depth is matched only by his integrity and open-heartedness. He was a lecturer at Stanford University, where he taught and facilitated a personal development course, Designing Your Life, that applied design thinking to students' personal and vocational development.

    A Certified Integral Facilitator, Gabe is the Director of the Integral Diversity Initiative, a practice-think tank exploring the application of integral theory and facilitation to the territory of diversity. With clarity and compassion he invites us to experience our interconnectedness through the truths of our differences. He grew up in the U.S. and Brazil and is currently based in Salt Lake City, UT.

    Cultural change is difficult, so much so, organizations rarely know where to start. Organizations usually start with structure or tools, which are relatively easy to change but don’t yield long-term competitive advantages. Some will go deeper, focusing on reward systems and performance measures, and a few will even pursue true behavioral change. These initiatives are great, but they don’t result in a purposeful culture.

     Margaret Bill Quandt

    Margaret Billy Quandt is an executive coach and consultant with over 17 years of experience working with leaders and their teams to achieve extraordinary workplace results.  

    Margaret is the founder and owner of Metro & Wythe Leadership, LLC, a leadership consulting and coaching firm. She is also a leadership consultant and coach for Artixan Consulting Group, LLC. Margaret additionally teaches part-time in the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University. She started her career in Human Resources working for Bristol Myers Squibb, where she partnered with leaders and their organizations around team effectiveness, performance management and change management. She later went on to run a global leadership development program for the top 3% of management and led the emerging middle management coach practice at Citigroup. Margaret then globally ran Talent Management for Anheuser Busch InBev and headed a large, multi-geographic HR team within Skanska, USA.
